Renewables’ share of Tunisia’s electricity production rose from about 2% in 2020 to nearly 10% in 2026. Tunisia still covers 65% to 70% of its gas consumption through Algeria, while the transit contract expires in 2027, according to Sami Ben Rejeb, quoted by Tunisiaonlinenews.

The share of renewable energy in Tunisia’s national electricity production rose from about 2% in 2020 to nearly 10% in 2026, international energy expert Sami Ben Rejeb said at the Tunisian Forum on Energy Issues on Thursday 22 October in Tunis, according to Tunisiaonlinenews.

This progress is not enough to reduce Tunisia’s dependence on external supplies. Between 65% and 70% of Tunisia’s natural gas consumption is covered by direct purchases from Algeria and in-kind revenues linked to gas transit, according to data presented at the forum. The Algerian gas transit contract expires in 2027, with a possible extension until 2029.

Sami Ben Rejeb called for diversification of sources and supplier countries, investment in infrastructure and better management of demand. He also recommended strengthening partnerships with major international energy companies while preserving investment opportunities for local producers. Shale gas exploitation, he added, should only be considered after a thorough assessment of its environmental consequences.

The announcement came on the same day as the publication of a diversified energy strategy advocated by Sami Ben Rejeb, after Tunisia set a target of 16% renewable electricity by 2027 on 22 October.
