Clashes broke out on Thursday between protesters and security forces in several Tunisian cities after the deaths of two men during alleged police interventions, reports Daily Maverick. In Jebeniana, in Sfax governorate, relatives said a man had died during a pursuit, while his family accused police of killing him after his arrest. Local media reported that he died after swallowing drugs.
In Jebeniana and the nearby town of Agareb, protesters blocked roads, burned tyres and threw stones at police. Security forces responded with tear gas and tried to protect a National Guard station, according to Daily Maverick.
In Sfax, students also protested after the death of a female student who suffered a heart problem. Her classmates denounced the delay in the arrival of paramedics and the lack of medical resources, calling for a strike at faculties on Friday. The violence comes after several thousand people demonstrated against the rising cost of living in Tunis on 17 October, the largest mobilisation against President Kaïs Saïed in several years.
