Oil pollution closes Umm al-Quwain beaches in the UAE

An oil spill has reached the coast of Umm al-Quwain in the United Arab Emirates, prompting the temporary closure of all beaches and coastal areas in the emirate. Containment and clean-up operations are under way, while the UAE Ministry of Climate Change says reported odours pose no health risk.

Marine pollution caused by an oil leak led to the temporary closure of all beaches and coastal areas in the emirate of Umm al-Quwain, United Arab Emirates, on Friday 23 October, according to the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.

Containment, clean-up and assessment operations are under way. The ministry asked fishermen to avoid the affected areas and said that odours reported in Sharjah, Ajman and Umm al-Quwain posed no health risk to residents. The vessel responsible for the leak and the circumstances of the incident have not been officially identified.

The incident comes as Donald Trump considers new military operations against Iran, possibly after the 3 November 2026 US midterm elections. The White House said the United States would not strike Iran before the vote. No link has been established between the pollution and the seven vessels that Tehran says it saw damaged near the Strait of Hormuz.
