Its leader, David Frederick, also wants representatives of both communities to take part directly in the discussions, according to a statement reported by The Namibian.

The Nama Traditional Leaders Association on Friday 16 October 2026 called on Germany to officially recognise the genocide of the Nama and Ovaherero committed between 1904 and 1908 in Namibia. It also called for official apologies and reparations for the affected communities and their descendants, according to a statement by its president, Gaob David Frederick, published by The Namibian.

The Nama leaders support a motion tabled in the German Bundestag by Die Linke, the left-wing political party, calling for recognition of the genocide, official apologies and reparations. David Frederick said that recognition without an apology would leave the justice process incomplete, according to The Namibian.
