Lawyer Félicité Esther Zeifman says she wants to seize Cameroonian state funds in France to secure payment of 7,500 euros owed by Deputy Minister of Justice Jean de Dieu Momo. She says an enforceable ruling by the Paris Court of Appeal, issued at least two years ago, has not been implemented despite her efforts, according to her letter to the Cameroonian president.
French lawyer Félicité Esther Zeifman is claiming 7,500 euros from Jean de Dieu Momo, Cameroon’s Deputy Minister of Justice, and has announced that she will seize funds belonging to the Cameroonian state held in France. In a letter to the Cameroonian president, she says a ruling by the Criminal Chamber of the Paris Court of Appeal, enforceable for at least two years, has still not been paid, Mimimefoinfos reports.
Me Zeifman, who practises at the Paris Bar and heads the International Network of Women Lawyers, says her attempts to reach an amicable settlement have failed. She maintains that bailiffs in Cameroon cannot intervene effectively because of threats and the minister’s opposition. She also disputes Jean de Dieu Momo’s claim that his taxes have been paid, saying she holds a letter from the tax authorities that contradicts him.
The lawyer says she will have a bailiff enforce an attachment of the Cameroonian state’s accounts in France to recover the sum and related legal costs. She nevertheless says she is open to an amicable settlement if the full amount is paid or a dated and verifiable commitment is made. She has asked the president of the republic to ensure the ruling is enforced without delay.
The move comes a day after French courts upheld an attachment of 11.7 billion against Cameroon, announced on 21 October. The attachment upheld by French courts concerns a separate legal case.
