Princess Lalla Asmaa, a member of Morocco’s royal family, paid her respects at the Kigali Genocide Memorial on Tuesday, laying a wreath and observing a minute’s silence in tribute to the Tutsi victims. The ceremony was attended by Jean Damascène Bizimana, Rwanda’s Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement, according to a statement from the Lalla Asmaa Foundation.
Welcomed by Alfonse Munyantwali, the memorial’s director, the princess visited exhibitions on the history of the genocide, survivors’ testimonies and the children who were killed. She also visited the Campaign Against Genocide Museum, housed in the Rwandan Parliament, which recounts the operations that ended the massacres in July 1994, the statement said.
The Gisozi Memorial, opened in 2004, houses the Rwanda Genocide Archives and a burial site where more than 250,000 victims are laid to rest. The visit follows a meeting between Jeannette Kagame and Lalla Asmaa on 26 October 2026.
