Equatorial Guinea will play Zimbabwe in Cameroon

Equatorial Guinea will finally play Zimbabwe in Cameroon in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation announced on 7 November. Bata Stadium was approved too late, preventing a change of venue accepted by the Zimbabwean team, according to the federation.

Equatorial Guinea will finally play Zimbabwe in Cameroon in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation (FEGUIFUT) announced on Saturday 7 November. The match cannot be held at Bata Stadium because its approval was delayed, according to the FEGUIFUT spokesperson quoted by Ahora EG.

When temporary approval for Bata Stadium was obtained, the Zimbabwean Football Federation had already made its preparations to play in Cameroon and refused to change the venue again, according to FEGUIFUT. The Equatorial Guinean federation said it had received government support and invested in renovating the stadium to enable it to host the national team.

FEGUIFUT apologised to supporters in Bata, who had prepared to welcome the national team, and called on the population to continue supporting the team for its next two matches, which its spokesperson said were important to its qualification chances.

The decision comes after the announcement that Zimbabwe would be hosted in Bata, published on 30 October, which still stated that the AFCON qualifier would be played at the Equatorial Guinean stadium.
