Chinese carmaker Chery will produce its new OMODA C4 vehicle at its recently acquired factory in Rosslyn, South Africa. Production will be preceded by infrastructure work and a programme to develop local suppliers; the model will be offered in petrol, hybrid and electric versions, according to the company.
Chery will manufacture its OMODA C4 crossover at its factory in Rosslyn, in South Africa’s Gauteng province, the Chinese carmaker said. The model will be Chery’s first vehicle produced in South Africa, according to the company.
Chery acquired the Rosslyn industrial site earlier this year, previously owned by Nissan South Africa. Preparations for production include work on infrastructure and networks, as well as a programme to develop local suppliers and increase the share of South African components.
The South African OMODA C4 range will include petrol, hybrid and fully electric versions. Shannon Gahagan, head of brand and marketing at OMODA & JAECOO South Africa, said local production would embed the brand in the country’s manufacturing industry and give customers a choice of powertrains.
The vehicle, first presented under the name C3, was designed in particular for a young clientele and focuses on a connected cabin. Features showcased internationally include a 13.2-inch central screen, a 540-degree panoramic camera system and 50-watt wireless charging. Chery will announce the final specifications, prices and South African launch schedule as its commercial release approaches.
