The Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa has decided to withdraw from circulation coins issued in 1958, 1959, 1972, 1976 and 1985. The measure will take effect on 1 November, following a decision by the Central African Monetary Union’s ministerial committee in N’Djamena, Ahora EG reports.

Coins put into circulation in 1958, 1959, 1972, 1976 and 1985 will gradually lose their legal tender status in countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) from 1 November 2026. The decision was taken on 7 October in N’Djamena by the Ministerial Committee of the Central African Monetary Union (UMAC), Ahora EG reports.

The withdrawal affects old coins used in CEMAC’s six countries: Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Chad. The measure is intended to remove these old issues from the regional monetary system.
