Ghanaian parliamentary minority leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has filed a fresh defamation suit against Ghana Gold Board chief Sammy Gyamfi and National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme chief Eric Adjei. He is seeking damages for calling him an extortionist; his lawyers say they adapted the proceedings to the High Court’s interpretation of the rules.

Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Ghana’s parliamentary minority leader, has filed a fresh defamation suit at the High Court in Accra against Sammy Gyamfi, chief executive of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), and Eric Adjei, chief executive of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP). He is seeking damages for being described as an “extortionist” in the media, the Ghanaian Times reports.

The new case comes after the Efutu MP discontinued his first action against Adjei at the Achimota Circuit Court on 20 October. A similar suit against Gyamfi was dismissed by the High Court, which found the pleadings defective. Afenyo-Markin’s lawyer, F. Paa Kwesi Abaidoo, said the fresh action had been filed in line with the court’s recent interpretation of the rules, despite the defence’s disagreement with the earlier ruling.

Gyamfi used the term during a JoyNews programme on 22 August, in a debate about an alleged $1.7 billion loss linked to the Bank of Ghana’s gold purchases. He was responding to Afenyo-Markin, who attributed the loss to GoldBod, and later challenged him to sue. Adjei is said to have repeated the accusation on Despite Media.

Afenyo-Markin’s lawyers had already pursued his defamation complaint, a step reported on 15 October in the case against Sammy Gyamfi and Eric Adjei.
