DR Congo deputies approve referendum on entire Constitution

Deputies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo adopted the revised text setting out the rules for a referendum, after incorporating the Constitutional Court’s observations. The law would notably allow the entire Constitution to be put to a vote and pave the way for a new Constitution, according to Le Potentiel.
National deputies of the Democratic Republic of the Congo approved on Friday the law setting out the arrangements for organising a referendum that could cover all constitutional provisions, including those beyond the powers of the constituted authorities. The text also provides for the possibility of adopting a new Constitution, according to Congolese outlet Lepotentiel.
The deputies reconsidered the proposal at the request of President Félix Tshisekedi, after the Constitutional Court declared it compliant with the Constitution subject to the removal, replacement or rewriting of certain provisions, reports Lepotentiel. The text must now be sent to the Senate for a second reading before possible presidential promulgation.
