A Bolsonaro family adviser says Flávio Bolsonaro is resigned after losing to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and fears imminent imprisonment. The candidate challenged the result before dropping his bid to annul it, while his father Jair Bolsonaro was convicted of attempting to overturn an election, the Washington Post reports.
A family adviser to Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, says the candidate is resigned after his defeat in the presidential election and fears a prison sentence. “He is terrified,” the adviser told the Washington Post, according to Zambianobserver.
Flávio Bolsonaro also fears that his father will die in custody and that he himself could be jailed as soon as this week, facing a long sentence, the adviser said. The candidate initially sought to have the election annulled, after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won by 4.4 million votes, but later abandoned his challenge.
The withdrawal came after Donald Trump called the election “rigged” without announcing any intervention. Flávio Bolsonaro also says the authorities ordered him to surrender his passport as part of an investigation into corruption and money laundering. He denies any wrongdoing. His father, Jair Bolsonaro, was convicted of attempting to overturn the results of a previous election.
Flávio Bolsonaro’s election challenge was reported on 26 October, after he dropped his bid to annul Lula’s victory.
