Uganda seeks bank account access to improve tax collection

Uganda’s government wants Parliament’s authorisation to access individual bank accounts as part of tax collection efforts. Minister Amos Lugoloobi said replacing tax numbers with national numbers would not automatically grant access, according to PML Daily.
The Ugandan government will continue to seek Parliament’s authorisation to access individual bank accounts in order to strengthen tax collection, Amos Lugoloobi, State Minister for Finance in charge of Planning and Economic Development, said. He was speaking during a parliamentary debate on replacing Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) with National Identification Numbers (NINs) for individual taxpayers, PML Daily reported.
Amos Lugoloobi clarified that linking the TIN to the NIN would not automatically give the URA, Uganda’s tax authority, access to bank accounts. Any consultation of this information would require separate legal authorisation, he added. Uganda will make the national number the tax identifier for individuals.
