Tunisia produces around 3.1 million tonnes of waste a year, nearly 70% of which is compostable or recoverable organic matter, said Awatef Larbi, an official at the General Directorate of the Environment and Quality of Life. A financing facility developed with the banking sector is to support investment in the circular economy, while the national strategy includes sorting waste at source.
Tunisia produces around 3.1 million tonnes of waste a year, nearly 70% of which consists of organic matter that can be composted and recovered, said Awatef Larbi, a management official at the General Directorate of the Environment and Quality of Life, speaking on radio.
Plastic accounts for nearly 12% of the waste produced. The national strategy for the ecological transition provides for strengthening waste reduction at source and introducing selective sorting when waste is generated, to improve the recovery of materials and limit pollution.
The roadmap is based on five areas, including governance and financing, tackling climate change, preserving natural resources and biodiversity, promoting sustainable consumption patterns and developing environmental awareness. Awatef Larbi also announced a financing facility for investment in the circular economy, in partnership with the banking sector.
