The United States, United Kingdom and eight allies condemn the 10-year sentence imposed on Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong after a new conviction linked to the national security law. The ten governments call for an end to prosecutions they deem unjust, according to their joint statement published on Friday.
The United States, United Kingdom and eight other countries have condemned the 10-year prison sentence imposed on Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong in a joint statement published on Friday. Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and New Zealand also supported the text, according to the Daily Post.
The ten governments say Hong Kong's national security law is being used against people for their political expression and participation in public life. They call for an end to prosecutions they deem unjustified under the law and urge China and Hong Kong to uphold international commitments and the rights provided for by the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration.
Beijing rejects the criticism. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun says Joshua Wong pleaded guilty in a case involving collusion with a foreign country or external forces aimed at endangering national security and calls on other countries to respect Chinese sovereignty and Hong Kong's judicial affairs.
Joshua Wong, 30, was already serving a four-year and eight-month sentence in another national security case and was due to be released in January. He was charged again in 2025 with activist Nathan Law over an alleged conspiracy to collaborate with foreign forces and obtain measures against China and Hong Kong, according to the Daily Post.
