A BBC investigation records at least 43 attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on hospitals and healthcare facilities in El-Fasher between May 2024 and October 2025. It also reports 55 healthcare workers killed, 120 injured and 10 missing or abducted between April 2023 and October 2025, according to BBC data.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the paramilitary group engaged in Sudan’s war, are accused of carrying out at least 43 attacks on hospitals and healthcare facilities in El-Fasher between May 2024 and October 2025, according to a BBC investigation. Some facilities were targeted repeatedly during the siege and subsequent capture of this Darfur city.
The investigation also records 55 healthcare workers killed, 120 injured and 10 others forcibly disappeared or abducted between April 2023 and October 2025. Surgeon Muhamed Suliman, who was in El-Fasher during the siege, said the attacks were intended to put hospitals out of service and deprive residents of all access to healthcare.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, described the findings as deeply concerning. He said that attacks on civilian infrastructure, particularly healthcare facilities, constituted serious violations of international humanitarian law and could amount to war crimes.
The RSF rejected the BBC’s findings. Its health minister described the accusations as propaganda intended to tarnish the group’s reputation. However, the World Health Organisation considers the events in El-Fasher one of the most serious examples of the Sudanese war’s impact on the healthcare system, a year after the city fell.
