The Shire Valley Transformation Programme will postpone water delivery to farms in Chikwawa, Malawi, until May 2027. The remaining first-phase works require an additional $197 million, while farmers hope to reduce their dependence on erratic rainfall, reports Mwnation.
Irrigation water delivery in the Shire Valley, Malawi, has been postponed to May 2027, Limbani Gomani, coordinator of the Shire Valley Transformation Programme (SVTP), announced, according to Mwnation. The delay is intended to allow contractors to complete intake works and install additional safety and regulation structures in Chikwawa.
The temporary conveyance system at the intake is expected to be completed in January 2027. Safety and water-control structures have also been added along the first 21 kilometres of the main canal, Gomani said during a visit to the project by the Parliamentary Agriculture and Irrigation Committee.
