Rwanda’s local elections will begin on 24 October and run until the end of November, from village leaders to district councils and national bodies. Elected representatives will serve five-year terms, renewable once, while the electoral commission is mobilising citizens on social media, according to Ktpress.
Rwanda’s local elections will begin on Saturday 24 October with voting for village leaders and continue until the end of November, with polls at local and national council levels. The National Electoral Commission of Rwanda (NEC), responsible for organising the vote, said voters would elect representatives to the country’s decentralised administrative structures.
The elections will notably cover district councils and national councils representing women, young people and people with disabilities. Elected representatives will serve five-year terms, renewable once. The NEC announced that more than 70,000 volunteers had been trained to support the process and that more than 2,200 polling stations were being prepared.
More than 90 election observers have registered to monitor the vote, NEC chairwoman Oda Gasinzigwa said on Friday. They include representatives of non-governmental organisations, the National Commission for Human Rights, political parties and religious organisations.
The launch of voting follows the training of volunteers tasked with supporting the local elections, announced on 4 October in an article on preparations for the vote. The mobilisation of women ahead of the vote was also reported on 22 October in an update on the election campaign.
