The Congolese association Marcher courir pour la cause (MCPLC) presented a proposed law on combating diabetes to Léon Alfred Opimbat, First Vice-President of the National Assembly of Congo-Brazzaville, Congo B reports. The association’s president, Rodrigue Dinga Mbomi, said his organisation had been working on the disease for eight years.
The proposal is to be followed up by Stella Smine Sassou Nguesso, the association’s patron, with the support of the National Assembly’s Health, Social Affairs and Gender Committee. Virginie Euphasie Dolama, president of the Health and Social Affairs Committee, praised the NGO’s awareness-raising and screening activities and called for the public to be made aware of diet and behaviour. She emphasised that diabetes also affects children.
The World Health Organization representative in Congo, Dr Vincent Dossou Sodjinou, said adoption of the law would make Congo “the first country”, without specifying the criterion for this distinction.
