Namibia has opened a centre in Ndiyona, in the Kavango East region, dedicated to climate-adapted agriculture and practical training for young people. The Education Ministry aims to teach horticulture and sustainable production techniques to support employment and entrepreneurship, Observer24 reports.

The Linus Shashipapo Climate Change Action Centre, inaugurated in Ndiyona in Namibia’s Kavango East region, is intended to train young people in horticulture and climate-adapted farming practices. Paulus Nghikembua, deputy executive director for lifelong learning, arts and culture, presented the project on behalf of Education Minister Sanet Steenkamp, Observer24 reports.

The centre will offer practical training in sustainable production and technologies adapted to climate change. The aim is to enable young people to develop productive activities while maintaining food production despite changing climatic conditions, Nghikembua explained.

The results of the activities are to be documented to assess whether the model can be extended to other regions of Namibia. Nghikembua also called on institutions and local stakeholders to work together to ensure the centre’s continuity.

The initiative comes as Namibia has also trained 21 young people in agricultural cooperative management, an effort reported on 5 October in an earlier article.
