More than 100 pupils from several schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye and Ijebu-Igbo, in Nigeria’s Ogun State, were hospitalised after suspected exposure to a toxic gas. Breathing difficulties and fainting led to the closure of some schools, according to Vanguard, while residents called for urgent action.

More than 100 pupils at several secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye and Ijebu-Igbo, in Nigeria’s Ogun State, were hospitalised on Wednesday following another suspected toxic gas emission. Pupils and staff suffered breathing difficulties and some fainted, Nigerian newspaper Vanguard reports.

The victims were taken to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital, Ijebu-Igbo General Hospital and other health facilities. Schools particularly affected included Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode and Itamerin Comprehensive High School in Ago-Iwoye.

A teacher speaking anonymously said the symptoms began at around 10am and that some schools in Ago-Iwoye closed at 11am. Parents went to the schools to collect their children. According to the teacher, similar emissions have occurred since April and have already sent hundreds of pupils to hospital, while residents are calling on the government to identify their source and put a stop to them.
