The Malian Centre for Industrial Property has registered the collective trademark “Karité du Mali”, intended to promote the output of thousands of rural women. The label is meant to protect the sector from counterfeiting, improve access to international markets and increase local incomes, reports Mali Actu.
The Malian Centre for Industrial Property (CEMAPI) handed over the registration certificate for the collective trademark “Karité du Mali” to the national shea sector on Friday 16 October. The document was passed to the Women’s Economic Empowerment Project in the Shea Sector (PAEFFK), and then to the Interprofessional Shea Association of Mali, according to Mali Actu.
The trademark is intended to protect products against counterfeiting and establish a quality standard for the cosmetics and agri-food markets. It also aims to better promote the work of rural women producers, secure their incomes and ensure that local communities benefit more from the sector’s revenues, according to Mali Actu.
