Burkina Faso and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) want to coordinate environmental and biodiversity protection efforts with Mali and Niger. The organisation plans to mobilise expertise and resources, notably to restore land and strengthen rural resilience, according to Burkina Faso’s Foreign Ministry.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) wants to strengthen its partnership with Burkina Faso and coordinate its environmental interventions for the benefit of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, members of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES). The organisation reaffirmed its readiness to mobilise expertise and resources at a meeting in Ouagadougou attended by Minister Delegate for the Environment Bebgnasgnan Stella Eldine Kabré/Kaboré, according to Burkina Faso’s Foreign Ministry, as cited by Lefaso.net.

Burkina Faso’s foreign minister welcomed this coordinated approach and confirmed his ministry’s willingness to continue the collaboration. Present in Burkina Faso since 1990, IUCN notably works on land restoration, water management and strengthening the resilience of rural production, according to Burkina Faso’s Foreign Ministry.

The planned cooperation forms part of the organisation’s interventions already aligned with the objectives of the RELANCE Plan, Burkina Faso’s national recovery programme. It follows the AES harmonising its positions ahead of negotiations with ECOWAS, announced on 16 October.
