Ghanaian researchers investigate apparent decline in fireflies and antlions

People in Ghana say they are seeing fewer fireflies and antlions, but these accounts are not enough to establish a widespread decline in their populations. Researcher Lawrencia Osae-Nyarko of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Ghana cites chemical spraying among possible factors, MyJoyOnline reports.

Ghanaian researchers are investigating the apparent scarcity of fireflies and antlions, locally known as “kokroko”. Residents say they encounter these insects less often in their everyday surroundings, MyJoyOnline reports.

Scientists say understanding how these populations are changing and why is a first step towards protecting the insects. Fireflies were known for their lights at night, while antlions leave small, funnel-shaped traps in the sand.
