Nigerian President’s Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila says health teams can contain Ebola after the rapid detection of a first case in Abuja. He credits its identification to the presidential task force’s protocols and says it will strengthen the necessary measures, reports Punch.

Nigeria has the means to contain Ebola after rapidly detecting the first imported case, President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, said on Wednesday, reports Punch. He credited the response to work carried out since June by the presidential task force on Ebola preparedness.

About 44,000 flights have travelled to or from Nigeria since the risk emerged in June, Femi Gbajabiamila said. The infected traveller showed no symptoms on arrival in Abuja, with symptoms appearing four days later. Health and Social Welfare Coordinating Minister Muhammad Pate said contact tracing and isolation were continuing with support from private hospitals and the immigration, aviation and interior services.

The assurance follows the announcement on 21 October that contact tracing and isolation had been activated in Nigeria after the imported case was confirmed.
