China denies preparing Xi-Trump-Putin summit

China says it has no information about a possible summit between Xi Jinping, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. The meeting could take place on 18 and 19 November in Shenzhen, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, according to Expresso das Ilhas, citing Chinese and Russian authorities.

China said on Thursday that it had no information about a possible summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning thus denied Russian indications that Beijing had begun preparing the meeting.

The summit could be held on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting, scheduled for 18 and 19 November in Shenzhen, southern China. Kremlin adviser for international affairs Yuri Ushakov said on Wednesday that Chinese authorities were preparing the meeting and could include it in the event programme if circumstances were favourable.

Donald Trump said he was willing to attend such a summit, expressing the wish that it should focus mainly on reviving negotiations on nuclear disarmament. The Kremlin supported this approach, while Moscow and Beijing reaffirmed their good relations during a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Chinese Premier Li Qiang, according to the Kremlin.

The Chinese statement came after Vladimir Putin proposed a summit on Ukraine without Volodymyr Zelensky, announced on 19 October. On 19 October, a Russian-American-Chinese summit on Ukraine was also rejected by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.
