The African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change wants adaptation finance at the heart of COP31 and is seeking a tripling of resources. It is also calling for replenishment of the Green Climate Fund before COP32 in Ethiopia, according to its chairman Nana Dr. Antwi-Boasiako Amoah.
The African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change (AGN) is calling for a tripling of funding for climate change adaptation and demanding the replenishment of the Green Climate Fund at the opening of COP31, scheduled for 9 November in Antalya, Turkey, MyJoyOnline reports. Its chairman, Nana Dr. Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, believes Africa must obtain concessional and grant-based financing to implement its national adaptation plans.
Developed countries pledged at COP29 to lead the mobilisation of at least $300 billion a year by 2035, but no detailed timetable for disbursement has yet been set, according to MyJoyOnline. The AGN wants to use COP31 to advance implementation of these commitments ahead of COP32, which will be held in Ethiopia and is to be presented as an “African COP”.
The AGN is also advocating the creation of a just transition mechanism that takes into account Africa’s energy poverty, workers and equitable access to natural resources, MyJoyOnline reports.
