Zambia and Malawi exchanged 25 prisoners at the Mwami-Mchinji border post: 23 Malawian nationals were transferred to Malawi and two Zambians returned to their country. The prison cooperation programme is intended to bring prisoners closer to their families and facilitate their reintegration, according to Oliver Liseba, a regional official with Zambia’s prison service.

Zambia and Malawi have transferred 25 prisoners between their prison services under a bilateral programme allowing them to serve their sentences closer to their families, reports MaraviPost. Zambia handed 23 Malawian nationals over to Malawi and received in return two Zambian nationals detained in the neighbouring country.

The exchange took place at the Mwami-Mchinji border post. Oliver Liseba, a senior official of Zambia’s prison service in the Eastern Region, said that maintaining family ties contributes to prisoners’ rehabilitation and reintegration. The programme is also intended to promote the exchange of practices relating to rehabilitation, education, vocational training and prisoner management.

Malawi’s commissioner responsible for prison operations and security, Aaron Kaunda, said the transfer implemented a resolution of the 20th session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security between the two countries. The meeting was held from 14 to 18 December 2025. The commission notably coordinates issues relating to defence, security, immigration and law enforcement.
