The Ugandan government is distributing 70,000 cocoa seedlings to farmers in Buikwe district to revive production after several years of falling prices. Launched by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, the initiative comes alongside growers’ calls for stronger agricultural advisory services, disease control and access to reliable markets, Nile Post reports.
Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries has begun distributing 70,000 cocoa seedlings to farmers in Ssi-Bukunja, in Buikwe district. The initiative aims to restore production of the cash crop, increase household incomes and stimulate agricultural investment, according to Nile Post.
Farmers welcomed the initiative, while calling for greater support to tackle cocoa diseases and strengthen agricultural extension services. Falling prices in recent years had led some of them to abandon the crop, Nile Post reports.
