Togo has embarked on a series of reforms to facilitate business creation, contract enforcement and trade. The country ranked 15th globally and first in Africa for the ‘starting a business’ indicator in the Doing Business 2020 ranking, according to Togofirst.
The measures include setting up specialised small-claims chambers, commercial courts in Lomé and Kara, and separating the handling of civil and commercial cases. The maximum time for settling a commercial dispute has been set at 100 days, while lawyers and bailiffs have access to the FORSETI trade platform, Togofirst reports.
The Togolese government has also digitised import and export procedures to reduce delays. Reforms also cover building permits, access to electricity and water, and property registration, areas in which Lomé is seeking to improve its ranking, according to Togofirst.
