Tesla will begin deploying its Cybercab robotaxis in Dallas next month, before expanding to other US cities by the end of the year. The carmaker also plans to sell the vehicles to fleet operators before the end of 2026, according to its chief financial officer Vaibhav Taneja, quoted by TechCrunch.
Tesla will expand its Cybercab robotaxi services to Dallas in November, before deploying them in other US cities by the end of the year, chief financial officer Vaibhav Taneja announced during the presentation of the third-quarter results, according to TechCrunch. The carmaker also plans to start selling its Cybercabs to fleet operators before the end of 2026.
Tesla already operates small fleets of autonomous Model Ys in Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa. The expansion of the Cybercab would put the company up against Waymo, Alphabet’s subsidiary and the US robotaxi leader, which operates more than 4,000 vehicles in more than a dozen cities. Tesla says its vehicle will be cheaper and simpler to produce, but it still needs to reach sufficient scale outside Austin to demonstrate this, according to TechCrunch.
Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive, said the ride-hailing business should not appear significantly in the group’s financial results before the second quarter of 2027, before becoming “probably significant” in the third or fourth quarter. Tesla has also replaced the metric for paid robotaxi miles in its shareholder letter with that of miles driven without supervision, which includes journeys without a paying passenger, according to TechCrunch.
The announcement comes after the publication on 22 October of an article about Tesla’s plan to sell its Cybercab robotaxis before the end of 2026 despite a US investigation. The Cybercab sales plan is the commercial step preceding the announced deployment in Dallas.
