Tanzania steps up Ebola screening despite no cases
By the AFREEQUE newsroom, based on Mwananchi

Tanzania has reported no Ebola cases but is stepping up screening of travellers at airports, ports and land borders, the Ministry of Health announced. Surveillance and preparedness measures are being strengthened amid the outbreak in the DRC and a case reported in Kenya in a patient who arrived from that country, according to Chief Government Medical Officer Bruno Sunguya, quoted by Mwananchi.
Tanzania has stepped up screening of travellers at airports, ports and land borders in response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a case reported in Kenya in a traveller from the DRC. No cases had been recorded in Tanzania as of 21 October, the Ministry of Health said in a statement reported by Mwananchi.
The Chief Government Medical Officer, Professor Bruno Sunguya, said the authorities were monitoring reports from communities and health facilities. They are also strengthening the preparedness of health centres and the availability of medicines and protective equipment.
The government has updated and distributed traveller guide number 18, dated 17 October 2026. The authorities are also training health workers and organising public information campaigns. Bruno Sunguya recommended regular handwashing and avoiding contact with bodily fluids or objects used by anyone showing symptoms suggestive of Ebola.
These measures form part of the regional response to the outbreak and the Kenyan case. Tanzania had also announced that it would monitor people exposed to the virus under an earlier scheme, reported in our article on Ebola monitoring in Tanzania.
