The European Union described the Libyan-Türkish agreement on the delimitation of maritime zones in the Mediterranean as “null and void”, after its ratification by the Libyan Parliament. The presidents of the European Commission and the European Council said the text infringed the sovereign rights of third countries and did not comply with the law of the sea, according to their joint statement.
Libya’s Parliament unanimously ratified the memorandum concluded with Türkiye on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction zones in the Mediterranean. The MPs also cancelled two 2020 resolutions rejecting the ratification and calling for political relations with Ankara to be severed, according to the assembly’s official spokesman.
