The presidents of the European Commission and the European Council said the text infringed the sovereign rights of third countries and did not comply with the law of the sea, according to their joint statement.

The European Union described the maritime memorandum concluded between Libya and Türkiye as “null and void”, after it was ratified by the Libyan Parliament on 20 October. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa said the agreement infringed the sovereign rights of third countries and did not comply with the law of the sea, according to their joint statement reported by Libya Herald.

The two European leaders reaffirmed the EU’s solidarity with Greece and Cyprus and its opposition to any outside interference in Libya. They recalled that the European position on the agreement was set out by the European Council in 2019 and had not changed.
