Seven people are standing trial at Nyarugenge Intermediate Court in Rwanda over the alleged theft of $260,189 from BPR Bank Rwanda through its electronic payment system, Taarifa reports. Prosecutors accuse former bank IT employee Manirakiza Obed of lowering the authentication level on some customers’ cards, switching them from the 3D system to the less secure 2D system.
The prosecution also accuses him of giving some co-defendants access to CyberSource, the bank’s payment platform. Investigators are relying in particular on messages which, prosecutors say, show coordination among the defendants. The transactions are alleged to have begun on 7 August 2025, before customers reported unauthorised withdrawals.
BPR suspended the cards concerned in October 2025 and closed the system under investigation.
