Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris rejected allegations linking Abdul El-Sayed, recently elected to the US Senate, to the Muslim Brotherhood. El-Sayed, who has also denied any relationship with the movement, became the first Muslim elected to the US upper chamber, reports Egypt Independent.
Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris rejected allegations of links between Abdul El-Sayed, a newly elected US senator from Michigan, and the Muslim Brotherhood. In a post on X, he described the elected official as a “smart, resilient and witty” Egyptian who had won his seat on merit, according to Egypt Independent.
The statement came after a video showing a tense exchange between Abdul El-Sayed and a voter at a town hall meeting in Michigan was widely circulated. Asked about his alleged links to the Muslim Brotherhood, the Democratic candidate firmly denied any relationship with the movement, according to Egypt Independent.
Naguib Sawiris’s reaction followed Abdul El-Sayed’s election to the US Senate, announced on 4 November. The result, described as a first for a Muslim in the upper chamber of Congress, was reported in Abdul El-Sayed’s election to the US Senate.
