Mozambique is resuming compensation for communities affected by gas development on the Afungi Peninsula in Cabo Delgado. The process was suspended after the 2021 terrorist attack in Palma and concerns resettled families as well as residents affected economically, according to Governor Valige Tauabo.

Cabo Delgado Governor Valige Tauabo has confirmed the resumption of compensation for communities affected by gas development on Mozambique’s Afungi Peninsula. The process had been suspended after the attack on the town of Palma on 24 March 2021, he explained.

Families directly affected by the operations have been resettled, but some are still waiting for their compensation to be paid. The government is now paying particular attention to residents affected economically, including those who chose cash compensation rather than an arrangement linked to coconut planting, according to Valige Tauabo.

Most of the people affected by natural gas development in the Rovuma Basin depend on farming and fishing. The governor said that the remaining cases were now being processed at a positive pace.
