Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro are ending their campaigns for the second round of Brazil’s presidential election in the country’s main electoral centres. Lula is heading to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, while Bolsonaro is holding rallies in Belo Horizonte and the economic capital, Expresso das Ilhas reports.
Brazilian presidential candidates Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro are wrapping up their campaigns on Saturday for Sunday’s second round, targeting the country’s main voter centres, Expresso das Ilhas reports. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a former president of Brazil, is due to visit Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro and then Paulista Avenue in São Paulo, two of the country’s largest electoral centres, with 34.1 million and 12.9 million voters respectively.
Flávio Bolsonaro, a senator and candidate for the Liberal Party, will start his day in the state of Minas Gerais, which has 16.4 million voters, before taking part in a motorcade in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, and heading to the former residence of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro. He had a lead of about two points over Lula in the first round.
Lula is counting on mobilisation by artists, students and social movements to reduce abstention, while defending his social record and democracy. Flávio Bolsonaro is relying on social media, influencers and the support of candidates eliminated in the first round, including Ronaldo Caiado, Romeu Zema and Augusto Cury, whose votes represented 5.34% of the votes cast.
The campaign has also shifted to digital platforms. Lula’s team accuses Meta, owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, of favouring his opponent and has filed a complaint with the Superior Electoral Court. The final day comes after the final debate between Lula and Bolsonaro and mutual appeals launched by the two camps.
