Ghana has called for the acceleration of local processing of African minerals to increase the economic benefits of their exploitation. Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) Chief Executive Officer Justina Nelson made the request on 19 October in Accra during a ministerial round table at the African Mining Policy Forum, according to MyJoyOnline.

Participants identified reliable and affordable energy, access to financing, transport infrastructure, geological data and technical skills as necessary conditions for developing processing industries. They also discussed the production of higher-value goods from minerals used in clean-energy technologies, particularly lithium.

Justina Nelson also called for the sharing of geological data and regional cooperation to strengthen African mining value chains. She called on governments to turn their policies and laws on local processing into concrete investments, MyJoyOnline reports.

The meeting took place five days after Ghana called for partnerships to process its minerals, published on 14 October. It also follows discussions opened by Liberia’s participation in the African mining summit in Accra, announced on 18 October.
