Formula 1 has signed a 10-year agreement with Rwanda to organise an African Grand Prix in the early 2030s on a circuit to be built in Bugesera. The project, led with the Rwanda Development Board, must meet the highest standards of the International Automobile Federation, according to Formula 1.
Formula 1 will return to Africa for the first time since 1993 under a 10-year agreement with Rwanda to organise an African Grand Prix in the early 2030s, according to MyJoyOnline. The announcement was made on Tuesday 13 October 2026.
The race will be held in Bugesera, about 40 kilometres south of Kigali, on a circuit built for the occasion near the new Kigali International Airport. The track will have to meet FIA Grade 1 standards, the highest level required to host a Formula 1 event. The project is being led by the Rwanda Development Board, the public body responsible for promoting investment and the country’s economic development, and the circuit is expected to be completed at the beginning of the next decade.
