By the AFREEQUE newsroom, based on Times of Eswatini

Eswatini’s Education Minister, Owen Nxumalo, accuses universities of offering honorary doctorates themselves, some of them questionable. The National Qualifications Framework Bill provides for tighter oversight of these titles and gives greater powers to the Eswatini Qualifications Authority, the Times of Eswatini reports.
Eswatini’s Minister of Education and Training, Owen Nxumalo, told Parliament that universities themselves approach people to offer them honorary doctorates. He was speaking during the presentation of the 2026 National Qualifications Framework Bill to the parliamentary committee responsible for his ministry, according to the Times of Eswatini.
Owen Nxumalo said he had himself been approached by a major South African university seeking to award him an honorary doctorate. MPs also warned of the growing number of unaccredited institutions, described as “fly-by-night” institutions, in the kingdom and neighbouring countries, the Times of Eswatini reports.
