The Democratic Republic of the Congo posthumously awarded cyclist Miguel Mumbere Masaïsaï the Gold Medal of Civic and Sporting Merit at a ceremony held in Kinshasa on Thursday 22 October, before his burial. The young Congolese man died in a road accident in the Republic of the Congo while cycling across Africa to promote peace, Lepotentiel reported.
Born in Goma in 2003, Miguel Masaïsaï had launched the “Pedals for Peace” project to connect the city to Rabat, Morocco, and raise awareness of armed violence in the east of the DRC. In 2025, he had already cycled from Goma to Cape Town, South Africa. The tribute ceremony was held on the grounds of the Hôpital du Cinquantenaire, in the presence of family members and government officials.
The award comes a month after Congolese cyclists paid tribute to Miguel Masaïsaï on 21 September, following his death. The tribute by cyclists in the DRC also recognised his commitment.
