The Comorian government has presented a first version of its migration policy to 2035, with measures on migrants’ rights, returns, combating trafficking and mobilising the diaspora. The project is being developed with support from the International Organization for Migration, according to the Interior Ministry.
The Union of the Comoros presented a first version of its national migration policy to 2035 at a meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohamed Ahmed Assoumani, according to the ministry. The document aims to bring state sovereignty, migrant protection and migration’s contribution to economic development within a single framework.
Drawn up with technical and financial support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the draft was presented by national consultant Moctar Zouboudou. Representatives of the presidency, the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights and Freedoms, the Directorate of Gender and the relevant administrations took part in the discussions.
Eight objectives structure the draft, including strengthening institutions, the legal framework and coordination between administrations. The text also provides for better protection of migrants’ fundamental rights, the prevention of irregular migration and the fight against human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
The government wants to promote safe and regular mobility pathways, organise returns and make greater use of the skills and financial resources of the diaspora. Adapting to climate crises, improving migration data and developing international partnerships complete the priorities announced by the Interior Ministry.
