Burkina Faso suspended beauty pageants from 8 June 2026 and banned their resumption before new regulations are adopted. The presidency meanwhile organised HAKILI Mousso, a science competition involving 84 female high-school graduates, 15 of whom were recognised on 19 September, La Nouvelle Tribune reports.

Burkina Faso launched HAKILI Mousso in September 2026, a national science competition for girls that brought together 84 female high-school graduates in mathematics, physics and chemistry. The initiative was organised by the presidency of Faso, La Nouvelle Tribune reports.

The launch came after all beauty pageants in the country were suspended on 8 June. The measure is intended to allow new rules governing such events to be drafted, with Burkina Faso’s cultural identity, moral values and human dignity as reference points, according to the statement signed by Noélie Congo Salouka, director-general of Culture and the Arts.
