At Berlin summit, John Amuasi urges action to prevent health crises

Ghanaian professor John H. Amuasi called at the 2026 World Health Summit for governments to tackle the environmental, social and economic causes of disease, rather than prioritising treatment after diseases emerge. This upstream prevention approach aims to reduce health risks and strengthen health system resilience, according to his remarks in Berlin.

Professor John H. Amuasi of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi has called on governments to prevent disease by addressing the environmental, social and economic conditions that make populations vulnerable, MyJoyOnline reports.

At the World Health Summit 2026 in Berlin, he advocated an approach called “One Health and Upstream Prevention”, focused on anticipating risks rather than only treating diseases once they emerge. He also called for stronger health systems, according to MyJoyOnline.
