Police officer Farai Gwamure, 51, is being prosecuted in Zimbabwe for extortion, criminal abuse of office and obstructing the course of justice after allegedly forcing a Chinese businessman to hand over 10,500 dollars. He appeared in court while serving as acting officer in charge of the Borrowdale police station, in Harare, reports 263Chat.
According to the prosecution, Gwamure allegedly acted with police officers Phibion Musadha, 45, Palmer Hotera and Takuranashe Magomba, as well as Nina Zheng, who is still being sought. The group allegedly wanted to recover 13,050 dollars after the failure of a chrome transport deal between Zimbabwe and Mozambique agreed by Zheng and Feng Lin, 38.
On 13 October, the suspects allegedly went to Lin’s home in Borrowdale with a Mossberg rifle. After his driver paid 3,000 dollars and a bank transfer of 7,500 dollars was made, they allegedly climbed over the property wall, assaulted the gardener and handcuffed Lin in his bedroom to demand the remaining 2,500 dollars. They then allegedly demanded an additional 1,000 dollars, threatening to refer him to immigration services. The court set the next hearing for 4 November, according to 263Chat.
