Zambian Health Minister Roma Chilengi says the public medical procurement agency awarded contracts worth 16.1 million kwacha to an unregistered supplier. He also reported 1.4 billion kwacha in contracts concluded despite audit objections, prices inflated by up to 1,613% and 4,096 untraceable shipments, according to his statement to Parliament reported by Diggers.

Zambian Health Minister Roma Chilengi told Parliament on Friday that contracts worth 16.1 million kwacha had been awarded to an unregistered supplier by ZAMMSA, the public agency responsible for procuring and supplying medicines.

Roma Chilengi also said that contracts worth 1.4 billion kwacha had been concluded despite internal audit objections. Some amounts were allegedly inflated by 1,613%, and 4,096 shipments had disappeared from the system. The minister said that procurement documents could not be found and that several files were incomplete or missing.

He assured Parliament that measures were in place to prevent medicine shortages at health facilities during the restructuring of ZAMMSA.
