UK threatens to suspend visas for Eritreans

Map: Eritrea

The United Kingdom is threatening to suspend visas for Eritrean nationals if Asmara refuses to take back citizens whose right to remain has been rejected or who have been convicted. London also plans to restrict the movements of Eritrean diplomats and withdraw some priority consular services, according to the British government.

The United Kingdom has warned Eritrea that it could suspend entry for all its nationals if Asmara does not co-operate in the return of Eritrean citizens who have no right to remain in the UK. The threat is aimed in particular at people who arrived in small boats or have been convicted of offences, Goobjoog reports.

London says Eritrea is not co-operating sufficiently with deportation procedures and presents the threat as a means of exerting pressure on countries whose nationals are in the UK. Eritrea is also represented in several United Nations bodies, where it recently secured responsibilities.
