Puntland civil servants are reportedly no longer being paid since fighting began in Calmiskaad, according to the Somali regional administration’s minister and deputy minister of Labour and Social Affairs. Before the Puntland Parliament’s Social Affairs Committee, they warned that delays could prompt employees to leave their posts, while salary payments fall under the Ministry of Finance.

Puntland has stopped paying its civil servants’ salaries since fighting began in Calmiskaad, the minister and deputy minister of Labour and Social Affairs in the autonomous region of north-east Somalia said. The two officials warned that public employees could leave their posts, according to Puntland Post.

Responding to questions from the Social Affairs Committee of the Puntland Parliament, the officials said responsibility for payment lay with the regional Ministry of Finance and that their own department could not resolve the problem. Civil servants and soldiers have also complained that they are not receiving their entitlements, while the authorities cite financial pressures linked in particular to the fight against terrorism.
