Libya to take Israel to court over Flight 114

Libya has announced its intention to take Israel to the International Court of Justice over the 1973 downing of Libyan Airlines Flight 114, which killed 108 civilians. Libya’s foreign ministry cites declassified documents from 2023, according to Libya Herald.

Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, based in Tripoli, has informed the International Court of Justice of its intention to bring proceedings against Israel over the downing of Libyan Airlines Flight 114 in 1973 over the Sinai Peninsula, Libya Herald reports. The move was conveyed to the international court in The Hague by the Libyan embassy in the Netherlands.

The aircraft was carrying civilians and its destruction killed 108 people. Libya’s ministry says the declassification in 2023 of minutes from Israeli cabinet meetings held at the time constitutes irrefutable evidence that Israel failed to meet its obligations to Libya under the 1971 Montreal Convention on civil aviation safety.
